Formed out of the Summer of Love in 1969, the infamous Taylor Camp was the ultimate treehouse "hippie fantasy" village, drawing waves of surfers, bohos, and Vietnam vets to this self-proclaimed utopia on Kaua‘i's north shore. Eight years later, the camp was burned to ash by the state, leaving these one-of-a-kind documentary photographs and stories from the campers themselves in its wake.

In 1969, Howard Taylor, brother of actress Elizabeth Taylor, lived on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kauai. Unable to build his dream home due to permitting issues, Taylor decides to bail out a rag-tag band of young Mainlanders jailed for vagrancy, invites them to live on his vacant oceanfront land, and Taylor Camp was born. Not long after, waves of hippies, surfers, and Vietnam vets find their way to the clothing-optional, pot-friendly, tree house village at the end of the road on Kauai’s North Shore. They lived the ultimate hippie fantasy until eight years later when the locals decide it’s time for them to go.
The hippie hideaway, documented in the original film, Taylor Camp, was released in 2009. In the years following, the filmmakers received new material and stories from some of the residents who spent their youth at Taylor Camp. Armed with a fresh perspective, Producer, John Wehrheim, and Director, Robert C. Stone, renamed and rereleased the documentary as The Edge of Paradise, capturing what was for many Campers, “the best days of [their] lives.” In 2019, The Edge of Paradise tells the story about a place of happiness that can still be found within — a place in your mind.
