NMG launches FLUX Sound with Grammy Award-winning Thundercat

Nella Media Group (NMG) today announced FLUX, its brand that represents The Current of Hawai‘i, will launch FLUX Sound, a music experience brought to you by The Modern Honolulu, that showcases Hawaii’s sonic talents and fosters cultural connections among global and local musicians. Building off the success of its first concept event, FLUX Shop—a retail pop-up experience in New York City, Los Angeles, and Sydney, Australia—FLUX Sound expands on the company’s love of music and continues the evolution of FLUX as a lifestyle brand.

For this inaugural event, taking place from December 13–14, 2017 on the grounds of The Modern Honolulu, FLUX Sound will feature a concert with Grammy Award-winning Thundercat—the jazz-fusion artist who is a frequent collaborator with Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, and Erykah Badu. Thundercat will take the stage alongside local musicians that participated in the Creative Lab Hawaii Music Immersive Program of the Creative Industries Division, DBEDT. FLUX Sound will kick off with a VIP exclusive artist roundtable and jam session at The Study, The Modern Honolulu’s intimate lounge space.

“Our aim with FLUX has always been to reorient how people think about Hawaii,” said Lisa Yamada-Son, NMG Chief Creative Officer. “With FLUX Sound, we hope to amplify the diversity of music found in the islands and create opportunities for Hawaii’s world-class musicians to share the stage and connect with recording artists from around the world.”

“We are extremely excited to host the first FLUX Sound event, and the first appearance of Thundercat in Honolulu,” said Lisa DeCambra, The Modern Honolulu Director of Sales and Marketing. “The Modern Honolulu is committed to showcasing experiences that represent our thriving and emerging music culture in Hawaii.  By partnering with FLUX Sound, to bring an inspiring artist talk story session in The Study and concert experience in our brilliant ballroom, we will continue on our tradition to deliver exclusive and unique experiences to our guests.”

FLUX Sound is made possible with support from The Modern Honolulu, the Creative Industries Division of the State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (CID/DBEDT), Hawaiian Airlines, and OluKai.

FLUX Sound in NYC

As a prologue to FLUX Sound in Honolulu, FLUX will embark on a promotional tour to New York City, sponsored by Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. As part of HVCB’s month-long celebration of Hawaii in New York City, FLUX will curate an experiential event that celebrates the sights, sounds, and soul of the islands as a preview for FLUX Sound.

The one-night event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on October 24, 2017 will feature a full band performance by local artist Izik, a participant in the Creative Lab Hawaii Music Immersive Program, dubbed one of Hawaii’s most exciting emerging pop and R&B artists; a performance by Roger Bong of Aloha Got Soul; visual art by Honolulu Biennial Foundation artist Sean Connelly; and event floral displays and a lei workshop by Tamara Rigney and Courtney Monahan of Paiko.
