NMG Network Grows Audience for Honolulu Pride 2020 and Celebrations with Lei and ‘Shaka and Shine’

HONOLULU, HAWAII – NMG Network celebrated a successful Honolulu Pride 2020 with strong ratings for its “Shaka and Shine” television special, and record-setting visits to Lei, which explores Aloha through the lens of the LGBTQ community.

“Shaka and Shine,” which featured profiles of inspiring LGBTQ+ trailblazers in Hawaii, delivered a stunning 4.97 rating and 6.14 share during its premiere on KHON2 on Oct. 15. The episode is estimated to have been viewed by 60,303 viewers during its premiere, according to KHON2.

The 30-minute special was rebroadcast on Oct. 16 and 18 on KHON2, and also aired on KHII on Oct. 17. The special was live-streamed on KHON2.com, KHON’s Facebook, and KHON’s YouTube channel.

Combined, “Shaka and Shine” generated an audience of around 160,000 over the four televised airings on KHON2 and KHII.

KHON2 is the #1 television station in Honolulu, Hawaii, owned by Nexstar Broadcasting Group. The station serves as the local affiliate of FOX (via its main signal) the CW (via its second digital subchannel), and GetTV (via its third digital subchannel).

Honolulu is in the 66th-largest DMA in the United States, with approximately 414,130 television households, as reported by Nielsen Media.

“Shaka and Shine” debuted a song dedicated to Hawaii’s LGBTQIA community, written by local musician Keilana Mokulehua, and was produced by NMG Network with the Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation as part of a first-ever virtual pride event. Project was hosted by Matt Guevara and Francine Beppu, NMG’s Network Strategy Director.

The LGBT Legacy Foundation supports programs that educate, unify and empower LGBTQ+ people as integral members of Hawaii’s larger diverse community.

Live, Love, Lei

Separately, an exclusive interview with Bretman Rock Sacayanan, a Filipino-American beauty influencer and social media personality based in Hawaii, helped Lei generate its best monthly traffic numbers since the site’s launch in 2015.

Lei is the leading voice for the LGBTQ community in Hawaii, and tells original stories through a beautiful print publication, online streaming video channel and digital experience.

Lei already had been enjoying a significant increase in site visits, new subscribers to its email newsletters, and views of Lei TV in 2020, making it one of the year’s fastest growing LGBTQ media brands.

Views of Lei content has increased 1,035% over 2019 through October 2020, according to Google Analytics.

NMG plans to continue growing the Lei brand with new episodes of its popular video series like “The Layover,” “Lei Exchanges” and “City Pride,” and projects that are perfect for brand partners looking to engage with the LGBTQ community.

The strong performance comes after Lei underwent a brand refresh this summer, introducing a revamped website and embraced “Aloha, with Pride” as a new storytelling approach to expand its reach and capture how Aloha is represented by the LGBTQ community around the world.

“The future is bright for Lei,” says Marc Graser, VP of Global Content for NMG Network. “Lei is an exciting brand that provides so many unique storytelling opportunities across all platforms for NMG and its partners.”
